Update on closure of schools due to haze

28th September 2015

Dear Parents

RE:  SCHOOL CLOSING DUE TO HAZE

The current haze level in Kuching has forced many schools, including Lodge School, to shut for a number of days before and after the recent school holidays.

The school management has discussed the haze situation and its effects on schooling, with the Director, principals and headmaster of the 4 entities and decided that all Lodge entities, except for the Lodge Kindergarten School, shall remain open from Wednesday, 30th September 2015 even if the Ministry of Education announces the closing of schools on Wednesday, 30th September 2015 and the subsequent days. However, if the situation worsens to hazardous level (API above 300), we will have to close the schools.

Although the haze level is unhealthy, the school can continue to remain open for lessons as long as the students do not engage in lessons or activities which require them to be outside their classrooms.  All classrooms in Lodge School, except for those in Lodge Kindergarten School, are fully air conditioned and thus your children can continue to receive lessons in a controlled environment. We strongly recommend that all students are to wear mask whenever they are outside their classrooms.

Lodge Kindergarten School will close if the Ministry of Education announces the closure of schools as the younger kids are more vulnerable than the older ones to the effects of the haze. Furthermore, the classrooms are not air conditioned.

The school management has also taken into account the many lessons and school days that have already been lost as a result of school closure due to the haze and the limited number of school days remaining before the students sit for the many examinations; PT3, SPM and Cambridge IGCSE & A-Levels, including the Final School Examinations.

Kindly inform us if your child has any health problems which may be aggravated by the haze and you can apply for your child to be exempted from coming to school.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Yours faithfully,

Thomas Huo Kok Sen
